Your favorite Linux distro?

Post  N2RJ on Thu Aug 08, 2013 11:59 am

What do you like?

Ubuntu? CentOS/RedHat? SuSE? Slackware? Debian?

I like Ubuntu but I live in the CentOS realm, since my daily work is done on RedHat.

I'm lazy. Ubuntu for me. I've been using Linux since 1998 off and on and never had the inclination to get real personal with it until Ubuntu came along. I used to be a Mandrake and Red Hat fan.

I have Ubuntu in VMware Player, it is so-so.
Linux Mint on my Netbook, and runs well.

I also have worked with Red Hat 6 Enterprise, and actually prefer this brand to the others. Engineering programs tend to use this variant exclusively.

After seeing the continuing train wreck from Microsoft, I have to pay more attention to Linux.

Mint was good for the netbook, but I need something to support engineering programs. Research shows that the engineering programs I use will run on RHEL. CentOS and Scientific Linux is suppose to be compatible with these engineering programs - they are being downloaded for demonstration.

I have had hands on with RHEL, and is workable.

Fedora is essentially the "proving ground" for RHEL.

I'm using the latest Fedora 19 + KDE 4 on my new multicore 64 bit desktop machine and it ROCKS !! Everything worked perfectly on install. No need for any kernel patches and recompiling, no hunting for driver modules, no malfunctioning hardware. It's just kicking *** and has so many new improvements and features. I can hardly tear myself away from it to celebrate Thanksgiving. LOL...

This is also my first Linux only desktop. In the past I always built uop dual boot systems , Windows and Linux. This machine is just running Linux. I am also still using my old machine as well. I jump between the two via a KVM switch. So if need be I can run Windows on the old one.
