Too Big A Hard Drive !!
I recently bought an inexpensive 64 bit dual code Dell inspiron 660S desktop to supplement my aging 32 bit single processor Dell Dimension 6000. It's basically a small mini tower, quite basic. I plan to keep using both machines via a KVM switch I installed which allows me to quickly swap between the old and new machines. I am installing Linux on the new machine but first replacing the OEM hard drive with a larger hard drive. So today I put in the new (3 TB) drive and figure I am set to go, now I can install and configure the OS and gradually migrate most of my apps to the new system. No luck. BIOS won;t recognize the new drive. At first I am puzzled. A new trick between Dell and Microsoft ?? Nope, I called Dell support and asked what the largest drive this new system will accept and they come back with an answer 2 TB. So now I have to see if I can return the 3 TB drive, get a refund and then I'll buy a 1 TB drive. If I need extra storage I have a 1 TB IDE drive that I can run via a USB enclosure. And once I get the new system configured and set up as a static host on the local Intranet I can do all sorts of fun stuff. Meanwhile I'm having fun running Fedora 19 off a live DVD on the new system and switching between systems with the KVM switch. I wish I installed a KVM switch years ago...makes it a lot easier to troubleshoot systems that people bring over. Instead of having to switch monitor cables and mice and sound cabled I just connect the system to one of the KVM ports and its good to go.
Tomorrow morning I try to return the 3 TB disc. In any event the moral of this story is simply check your hardware specs or contact the manufacturer of your BIOS (or the company that built your system) and find out what the max size drive it will recognize before you buy a large drive.

Yeah, under normal circumstances I would build my own system. However, I had a Dell $200 gift card from a laptop that I bought for a family member and it was just about to expire so I figured I'd use it towards the purchase of a new desktop. Besides, my old 32 bit machine (which is still in limited use) was getting a bit outdated. But yeah, it was weird, I removed the Windows crippleware the new system came with, put in the 3 Tb drive and was all set to go when it wouldn't recognize a brand new drive. So, now I have a 1 Tb drive in the new system devoted to just Linux. First non-dual boot machine I ever set up. It's just that Linux has gotten so good these days I see no need for Windows. Besides I have 3 other systems that are capable of booting into Windows but these days the need for that almost never arises. I am still planning to build up a nice kickass system from scratch. Oh, BTW the store took back the 3 Tb drive with no prob.W2IBC wrote:I have never ran into this problem before. course this is just another reason I will never buy from the companies like dell, ill just build my own.
