Looked like most of the cars were before my time. In HS, it was 1968 - early 70's cars, such as Camaro's, Firebirds, Mustang, GTO, 'Cuda's, etc..

When I was going to school, all of us poor kids had 50's cars. The rest had 70's cars. I had a 1958 Pontiac Chieftain. It would barely make a screech when you pressed on the gas, but the thing was over 2 tons. I tried to repaint it and make it nice, but I had no guidance and did not do well with the sprayer. It looked okay. I made it 2 tone blue. Made a cloth upholstery and it was more comfy than the cracked vinyl. I had several problems with it. One was that it started blowing white smoke one day on my way home from school. I opened the valve cover and one rocker arm had shattered. I replaced that and it was good. One day it would not start. That was a problem with the wire connection to the key switch. It had play in the steering. It also had vacuum powered windshield wipers. But the vacuum came from a pump on the water pump so it didn't slow down when you pressed on the gas. It was nice. Continuously variable speeds. No failure. The gas tank was accessible from behind the backup light. It took leaded fuel. My grandfather bought it for my sister in 1968 for about $80. She wouldn't drive it. She drove my parent's car instead. They drove the truck. She was always wrecking cars and driving up insurance. Oh what a great sister to let me have a car.

My uncle subscribed to Hot Rod back in the 60's and he used to save them for me. i loved looking through them. I remember they had a lot of Tommy Ivo and George Barris custom stuff but they also had features that mere mortals could build if you had the money.

I got my drivers license in 1967 and my first car was a 1959 Ford station wagon. Not a car that you would soup back then but I did put a Pep Boys chrome air cleaner on it.
